Second Day of Class

Second Day of Class I dont make schedules or use planners. In fact, I dont even use Google Calendar. It is slightly amusing to see fellow classmates toting multicolored, multi-ringed, colorful planning books complete with enough pens to double the colors of the rainbow. In a class that I was in today, a classmate next to me opened up her Google Calendar (complete with tabbed events in 10 different colors) and I realized that if I cross my eyes slightly, her calendar almost resembles the pointillist works of Seurat. Pretty cool actually. I realized in college over the last two years that this lack of organization was partly due to never getting used to having a planner (I jot it down and never open the planner again), but mainly due to apathy and laziness. Ive realized that the philosophy which works the best for me is, well, if I cant remember the event, then it must not be important enough in the first place. And thus Ive mentally justified my use of not using schedulers or planners. :P (dont worry this just means i have to prioritize earlier) I do keep a Post-It pad with me on my desk and in my backpack. When I have to remember really important events (like where my classes are meeting or my advisers phone number), I usually write them down on a Post-It note, and then stick it somewhere where Ill remember to look at (like on the wall, or in my pocket most of the timehaha). In defense of not using a schedule, I think my primary reason is that I enjoy the feeling of spontaneity in a day. I enjoy not having everything laid out in a regimented fashion on a sheet of paper or on a screen. Theres a certain peace of mind about thinking that right now Im living in THIS moment, without thinking about the classes, the meetings, and other events that Ill need to be rushing off to later. Which is also sometimes why I slip off and just amble along the Charles during the pauses in my days since getting back to Boston (the river is beautiful now). Theres a certain serenity and peace about grasping on to those little pauses during the day something that I know will be much harder to do once I enter The Real World after the next two years. I shall stop beginning my paragraphs with the letter I. But ANYWHOO that was a long explanation on why I dont ever have any of those cool visual schedules to tell you what my scheduling looks like for the upcoming semester. =p So these two days of class has been pretty intense. Well, so for everyone non-frosh, this Tuesday was Reg Day, where we go meet with our advisers and register for the classes that weve pre-reged for and which we will be taking for the upcoming semester. Well, the thing is, now that having finished most of the biology core requirements, I have a lot of space for electives, and deciding which exactly to take is hard! (yes, once you finish the GIRs and many of your major requirements, course selection does become difficult) Thus, pretty much my adviser signed off on the litany of classes I initially put on my schedule and I set off to explore the classes that Ive signed up for (but also many others which I didnt initially anticipate). Yesterday, I attended a total of EIGHT hours of class (one three-hour class, one two-hour class, two 1.5-hour classes). This makes for my most productive day ever since coming to MIT (I didnt even have eight hours of class in one day during high school, lol). This was what it looked like: 9:30 AM 11 AM (7.06 Cell Biology) For me, this is my last Course 7 requirement in the 7.0x string, beginning from 7.01, going through 7.02, 7.03, and 7.05). As customary with the biology core requirements, its a very full class, with many familiar faces from 7.03 and 7.05. The best thing I got out of the first class Prof. Lodish: Biology IS History. (he was trying to tie in how biology is a chain of evolutionary events, just like history is a chronicle of past events). This was really interesting because Im seriously looking into declaring a 21H (history) double major during my remaining semesters here Im going to be taking probably two history courses this semester to explore the department and then making a decision in the spring. 11 AM 1 PM (7.21 Microbial Physiology) So initially, I didnt think I was going to be taking this class, because 1) I know pretty much next to nothing about bacteria except how to grow them in the lab and 2) the course title sounds daunting (how can you have an entire class about microbes?). But after this summer, my friends girlfriend at Berkeley who is a Microbial Biology major told me to give the subject a try, so I went for the first session. The class is interesting since its the smallest biology class Ive been in since coming to MIT, and even among the 40 or so students who are there, it was a 50-50 split between grad and undergrad students! (its a joint grad/undergrad course, I realized later). The class seems to be focused heavily on science literature discussion, which would probably be a departure from the traditional lectured-at biology classes that Ive been in, so maybe I will end up giving this a try. 1 PM 2:30 PM Lunch break so I wouldnt starve. 2:30 PM 4:00 PM (9.01 Intro to Neuroscience) This is the gateway course to the BCS (Brain and Cognitive Science Course 9) department, and thus its usually full of sophomores who are taking the course as their first foray into Course 9. Ive heard a lot of good things about this class from non-course-9 majors whos been through the class, describing the class as engaging and even fun, so I thought I would give it a try, from having taken an onslaught of biology and chem classes since I exited the GIRs. I thought the first class seemed promising, so Ill probably just stick it through and see what happens :) (oh and the class is in the beautiful BCS building (building 46). being in that building always makes me so happy, lol) 4:00 PM 7:00 PM Took the bus to Harvard on an errand, and had a great dinner at the Vietnamese place next to Harvard Square. I must honestly say that all east coast Asian food has paled in comparison that in the Bay, after this summer, sadly but nonetheless, it was still good. :) 7:00 PM 10:00 PM (21H.308 the Vikings) Originally I was going to take 21F.712 (which is like Spanish 5 here), but then this history deal came up and I thought I should look into more history classes this semester, so I signed up for this its a totally different feeling having classes at night, actually. The class itself isnt bad, but I might be looking into another history class since it was a bit of just meh for me. 10:00 PM 12:30 AM Went home, and iHouse had an impromptu Wii party (while we still have the time and energy to before the Great Academic Onslaught), which culminated into me getting wacked by the Wii controller during Wii Boxing and getting a huge bump on my forehead (it didnt really hurt much, but it was crazy how fast it swelled up ). Im afraid that Wii Boxing turned more into Real Life Boxing, haha. (hey at least we didnt break the TV :P) I finished up course shopping today by going to another three classes 9:00 AM 11:00 AM (7.20 Human Physiology) This is an earlyyyyy class! but otherwise, the content seems fascinating actually. Its interesting how MIT would structure a physiology class around the molecular basis, rather than just straight-up memorization. (ie. the class going to explain from a biochemical perspective how parts of your body work rather than making student memorize names to body parts or names of bones). I will probably blog more about the bio major before I graduate, but this just illustrates again that Biology here is really a THINKING major, not the typical run-of-the-mill biology majors you are familiar with (the ones that make you memorize phylum names or trivia like AP Biology). Just like the engineering courses here, the focus is on problem-solving, and I would say the focus is definitely on why? rather than just what? 11:00 AM 12:30 PM (7.30 Ecology I) I signed up for this class because I think itll also be cool to explore ecology, which I briefly touched on after self-studying all of AP Environmental Science in 60 hours during my senior year of high school. -___-;; Unbeknownst to me, I actually stumbled upon a Course 1 CI-M* class. (we have things called CI classes at MIT which stands for Communication Intensive. its basically another way of saying that theres going to be a lot more essay writing in the class, usually ending in some sort of lengthy paper. there are CI-Hs, and CI-Ms. CI-Hs are CIs in the humanities, which you take as part of your HASS (humanities) requirement for graduation. CI-Ms are CI classes in your major, which you have to take two to graduate most CI-Ms in the science majors are lab classes, and your resulting write-up and paper is counted as the CI aspect) There is a major 10-15 paper/project assigned for the course, but I think it may prove to be an interesting challenge, so I guess Ill keep it and see how it goes. As this is also a Course 1 class, theres plenty of 1C (civil engineering) and 1E (environmental engineering) majors in the course, so it was also cool to be in a class with a different crowd. 12:30 PM 1:00 PM Short lunch at Stata. 1:00 PM 2:30 PM (21H.466 Imperial and Revolutionary Russia) This is a tiny class! (7 people) I actually miss these classes a lot from high school, since the two years past then has generally been lectures with 100+ kids even most of my HASSes had 20 or 30. The course content already proves to be pretty engaging so Im definitely looking forward to how this goes in the coming semester. SOOO that concludes all 13 hours of course-shopping, and as you can see thats a total of 84 (127) credits, which is NOT a good idea (but which I can actually technically take since there are surprisingly no scheduling conflicts, lol and I dont even have class on Friday! I dont know how all of this worked out, haha). Im definitely keeping 7.06, 9.01, and 21H.466, dropping 21H.308, most probably keeping 7.30, and either 7.20 or 7.21 (I really want to take 7.20 but I have a pretty full semester, considering Im probably also doing a UROP, so Im not sure whether to drop it (ill be somewhat sad) or stick it through on Pass/D/F (the class is informally known for its difficulty)). Im aiming for 60 credits (5 classes) + UROP, and potentially another history class if I can find one that fits in my schedule and one that Im interested in. In any case, lets hope sleep and sanity isnt a problem this semester :)

What It Means To Be A Senior Free Online Research Papers The last year at LCC is a struggle for many senior students, as they are busy with their final academic projects, which consume almost all of their time. If you ask a fourth year student about his/her leisure time, they will tell that they do not have much of it. Business majors especially face the challenges of writing a thesis, a business plan, or taking a comprehensive examination. Besides the tension of writing and completing the final academic project, this year business majors also struggle with disturbing technical issues in the Comprehensive Examination class. This year’s Comprehensive Examination class is disadvantageous because of the unfavorable time period, the big number of students, and the students’ attitude towards their fellows who are willing to learn. Business majors have an opportunity to choose a thesis defense, a business plan, or a comprehensive examination as their final academic projects for the last year at LCC. The Comprehensive Examination class is held every spring semester. The students have to analyze real global business companies and come up with solutions to the problems the companies face at the moment. The students are responsible for the analysis of two individual cases, one team case, and a team case presentation. Students receive 50 percent of their grade during the semester. Another 50 percent is earned by taking a comprehensive examination at the end of March. The examination itself is held on the weekend from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and lasts for 12 hours. Students get a business case and they need to write an analysis during that day. Due to the big number of students taking the exam and not enough computers in the computer lab, students are divided into two groups. One group takes the exam on Saturday, while anot her group on Sunday. After the examination the students are finished with this course and the only thing left for them is to wait for the results, which come at the end of the semester. The first negative aspect of the class this year is that it is held at a very inconvenient time. The course starts at 6.30 p.m. and ends at 9.45 p.m. every Thursday. Many students are not satisfied with this schedule, as they are already tired after several classes held in the morning and in the afternoon. Naturally, their mind is not working the same as it was in the first half of the day. Besides, it becomes very difficult to concentrate and motivate yourself to stay attentive and focused for one more class. The main complaint coming from the fourth year students is that such an important class for them is held so late. Such a distracting technical issue as a late class time limits their attention and motivation to learn the material that would be valuable during the final examination. Another negative issue concerning the time frame of the class is that it lasts for three hours. Again, attending a late class is already a challenge, but when the students have to sit at one place for three hours, then it becomes even more of a struggle. For this reason, many students are attentive and stay awake for one hour at most. After that, the interest in the class material and the motivation to listen is lost and everyone starts looking at their watches to find out how much time is left to sit there. Many students even leave and simply go home, as for most of them sitting and learning nothing is just a waste of time. When asked, seniors say that they would prefer to have a three hour Comprehensive Examination class early in the morning rather than late in the evening. Basically, the evening class time and the length of it are two major disadvantages towards the students’ motivation and eagerness to learn. Besides the unfavorable time period, the large number of students registered for the course also is a challenge. Providing only one block for this course results in having all 79 fourth year students at the same time in the same room. This semester this class is held in Neufeld Hall. It is reasonable to choose such a room, but at the same time it becomes very difficult to control such a huge group of people. The professor struggles to keep everyone in the room silent and to get everyone’s attention to what she is saying. Especially it is difficult to control the students sitting in the back rows. They are chatting aloud, laughing, drawing, anything except listening carefully, which is very rude for both the professor and the students. So this class is always accompanied with disturbing noise coming from the back rows. The professor tries to calm everyone, but only for the short time because many students will start chatting again after several minutes of silence. The late time frame of the class is also related to the difficulties of controlling the big number of students. All of them are tired and not motivated anymore. Such a big number of students in the room at the same time is the basis for the chaotic atmosphere. The last negative aspect of the Comprehensive Examination class is the students’ attitudes and behavior towards their fellow students. Many of them do not understand that there are students who are willing to learn new material from this class and appropriately prepare for the final examination. The disrespect is perfectly illustrated during the team oral presentations of the analysis of the company. The teams orally present the analysis and the recommendations for the solutions to the problems. Presentations last for 30 minutes and after that presenters expect questions from the audience. However, once the team starts presenting, the audience begins doing whatever it wishes. Some are chatting, eating, and even sleeping. Nobody is listening to the team, and because nobody asks questions afterwards, presenters say that they feel as if they are talking to the wall. The behavior of fellow students is inappropriate and rude, which creates a feeling that students do not care about their final academic project and do not even motivate themselves to give it a try. The other options for the final academic project, such as thesis defense and business plan classes, also have a similar situation. The classes start at 6.30 p.m. and also are held for three hours. For this reason, all students graduating in 2007 and taking either thesis defense, business plan, or comprehensive examination have no other choice except attending these classes at a late hour. However, the main difference between the other options for the business majors and the comprehensive examination is the number of students attending the class. The majority of LCC graduates choose the comprehensive examination as their final academic project. As a result, the students who have a thesis defense or a business plan have an advantage of working in a smaller class, which allows them to study more efficiently. The previous year’s Comprehensive Examination class was better organized and managed. Last year this course was divided into two time blocks and students attended two morning sessions of the class. There were no problems concerning time, because students are better motivated and not tired in the morning. Also, having two time blocks for this course solved the problem of having a big number of students in one room. This definitely had a positive effect on the efficiency of students’ learning. Overall, last year’s organization of the Comprehensive Examination class was very helpful to the students’ final academic projects. Despite all the negative things of this year’s Comprehensive Examination class, there are also some positive aspects of it. First, the content of the course itself is beneficial to the students. They are introduced to and learn to analyze big, global companies, becoming familiar with the tools for analyzing such cases. Students learn to spot the immediate problem of a particular company through reading numbers and interpreting financial and other information. Another positive aspect is that the professor also understands that the time schedule and the three hour length are a struggle for the students and her as well. For this reason, she makes at least two breaks, so that all students could refresh their minds. This year’s Comprehensive Examination class has many disadvantages for the graduates. Hopefully, this situation will not be repeated next year because then even more LCC graduates will suffer from it. As there are many students’ complaints about this issue, the Registrar Office should take them into consideration. Keeping in mind that it is the major final academic course for LCC graduates, the Registrar Office should admit that this course is organized poorly this year. For this reason, the Registrar along with LCC Business Department should not experiment with the fourth year students. Instead, it should create good conditions to study and appropriately prepare for the final comprehensive examination, business plan, and thesis defense, which lead students into the successful business career. Using German Participles as Adjectives and Adverbs As in English, the past participle of a German verb may be used as an adjective or adverb. In English,  stolen  is the past participle of the verb  to steal. The word  stolen  can be used as an adjective, as in: â€Å"Thats a  stolen  car.† Similarly, in German the past participle  gestohlen  (fromstehlen, to steal) can also be used as an adjective: â€Å"Das ist ein  gestohlenes  Auto.† The only significant difference between the ways that English and German use the past participle as an adjective is the fact that, unlike English adjectives, German adjectives must have an appropriate ending if they precede a noun. (Notice the -es  ending in the example above. More about adjective endings in  Lesson 5  and  Adjective Endings.) Of course, it also helps if you know the correct past participle forms to use. A past participle such as  interessiert  (interested) can also be used as an adverb: â€Å"Wir saheninteressiert  zu.† (â€Å"We watched  interestedly/with interest.†) Present Participles Unlike its English equivalent, the present participle in German is used almost exclusively as an adjective or adverb. For other uses, German present participles are usually replaced by nominalized verbs (verbs used as nouns) -   das Lesen  (reading),  das Schwimmen  (swimming) - to function like English gerunds, for instance. In English, the present participle has an -ingending. In German the present participle ends in -end:  weinend  (crying),  pfeifend  (whistling),schlafend  (sleeping). In German, â€Å"a  sleeping  child† is â€Å"ein  schlafendes  Kind.† As with any adjective in German, the ending must fit the grammatical context, in this case an -es  ending (neuter/das). Many present participle adjective phrases in German are translated with a relative clause or an appositive phrase in English. My Ambition Is To Become a Collector

MY AMBITION IN  LIFE Life affords no higher pleasure than that of surmounting difficulties, passing from one-step of success to another forming new ambitions and seeking them gratified. – Samuel Johnson In the life of mankind one has his own dreams and wishes. The dreams transform in to vibrant thoughts concerning about his career and future. No one can exactly predict what role he has to play in the society as the World is a play stage and all people are just performers in that center-stage. Ambition doesn’t need to be made of sterner stuff. It is an exaggeration of your dream and thoughts of how you want to be in your life. My ambition is to become an IAS officer. Though I know that the magnitude of civil services exam is tough but still I feel it is a challenge to relish upon. IAS – Indian Administrative Service sounds and preludes a sense of pride in the minds of the selected candidates. To lead a district/bunch of villages is not a simple joke and every time you need to be on your toes, manage crisis and you need to be a decision maker as well as an efficient leader. The very wish of me becoming an IAS officer is infused by the social evils that prevail in the society. The sufferings faced by poor and the destitute ignite the spirit in one’s self and instigate the proceedings. Every one should at least have access to basic amenities like food, shelter, clothing etc. Nothing can be changed in a day’s time, but it is possible only by the cumulative efforts of all people. If India is to become a super-power, she needs to get out of the webs of poverty, unemployment, social inequality and communal riots. So why IAS I don’t want to myself lie between the cobwebs of matrimony and job. Indeed I want to contribute something for the nation for her progress and development. India is in urgent need of youths who are determined for the sake of the nation. IAS officer to some extent can spur a change in the lives of people under his control. The task doesn’t end here and one needs to devote his soul to the nation building politics. The infusion of young blood in politics will surely have a great impact in the development of our nation. Ambition affords no greater responsibility, no greater privilege than the raising of the next generation. India is one of the most corrupt countries and this evil pegs her at the developing nations list. My ambition constitutes the dream of living and dying in a   Ã¢â‚¬Å"Developed India – 2020†. Set in the early 1920’s, The Great Gatsby (1925) written by F. Scott Fitzgerald is narrated by Nick Carraway, a young man returning to Long Island, New York to seek his fortune as a bond salesman. The glamorous tale follows Jay Gatsby and his burning desire to be reunited with striking Daisy Buchanan, the love of his life. The various settings in The Great Gatsby (1925) primarily serve to provide the reader with an understanding of the characters’ ideals and novel context. The profound contrast between suburbs, East Egg and West Egg, reflect the values of Tom and Daisy Buchannan, Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway. Tom and Daisy are superficial characters, living in a suburb of incredibly wealthy and egotistical people. Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau are still considered two of the most influential writers of their time. Ralph Waldo Emerson, who was a lecturer, essayist, and poet, Henry David Thoreau is his student, who was also a great essayist and critics. Both men extensively studied and embraced nature, and both men encouraged and practiced individualism and nonconformity.
